Affectionately known by many as Rob or Robbie, Robert Neurumba has just entered his 16th year of working at Nguni this past September. A true gent amongst giants, Robbie embodies all that is great and good at the restaurant and has played and continues to play, a key role in its success. When putting this blog together (the first in a series on the employees that make Nguni what it is), I asked the owners, Jacs, and Nats, via our WhatsApp group just to send me a few words on what Robbie means to Nguni. In a flash, Jacs wrote back ‘HE MEANS EVERYTHING’. Which says it all really. However, she quickly followed with ‘But Nats is the one with the words.’ Nats responded, ‘Robert has been with us since the beginning – 15 years and amazingly still sane. Not only is Rob an amazing waiter, a reliable and dependable manager but also the driving force behind Jacs and me – an inspiration on tough days and continuous support with a great sense of humor every other day. Thank you, Robert!’

What is your full name?
Robert Neurumba aka Rob aka Robbie
How long have you been working at Nguni?
I started in September 2007, so just passed 15 years!
What is your job title?
General Manager
What are your job responsibilities?
My job starts with satisfying the needs of all our guests, which is the Nos. 1 responsibility. After that, my responsibilities include opening and closing the restaurant; answering phone calls both on and off duty; doing daily cash up and front-of-house training; stock rotation; beverage orders and quality control; general admin; liaising with guests; price control and front of house.
What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy working with people as it exposes me to so many different cultures of the world as well as food and religion. I learn something new every day.
What do you dislike most about your job?
Not at a lot! But if I had to choose something it would be guests who prefer to complain on social media instead of letting me know directly what their concerns are. Thankfully, this does not happen too often.
Which dish is your favourite from the Nguni menu?
(no hesitation) the Ribeye, medium-rare with lots of Chimichurri sauce.
What are your hobbies away from work?
Soccer is my real passion and I love following MANCHESTER UNITED (written in all caps for my benefit after Robbie saw my Liverpool crested Whatsapp profile screen). I also love swimming and hanging out with my friends. I am also Christian and don’t drink or smoke. And when I get the time I also love to travel and hike.
